   Before your tartiflette arrives, understand why this place exists. After WWI, Baroness Noémie de Rothschild refused to ski in Chamonix - too many German tourists. In 1916, she created Megève from scratch: hiring architects to design fake 'traditional' chalets, importing artisans to create atmosphere, and marketing it to Parisian aristocracy. Megève was the world's first designed luxury ski resort. Every wooden beam you see was placed to look authentically rustic. Ask your server which chalets are actually old (almost none).

   Taste the Tartiflette Marketing Scam (Again)

   Order the tartiflette and remember: this 'traditional' dish was invented in the 1980s by the Reblochon marketing board. The older dish, 'péla,' used leftover cheese. Tartiflette specifies a whole Reblochon cut in half, face-down on potatoes. Pure marketing genius. Pair with Jacquère - the crisp acidity cuts through the richness. Ask your server if they know when tartiflette was invented. Most don't. Budget €25-35 per person.

   Find the Chalet That Invented Chalets

   Walk through the village and look at the chalets. The modern ski chalet - farmhouse aesthetic meets luxury interior - was invented here in the 1920s by architect Henry-Jacques Le Même. Before Megève, ski buildings were either functional huts or grand hotels. Le Même created a third category: buildings that looked humble outside and pampered you inside. Every ski resort in the world copies this formula. Find a Le Même original (the tourist office can direct you).

   Order Vin Chaud Made With Actual Wine

   If you want vin chaud (mulled wine), ask what wine they use. Most ski resorts use cooking wine. Better establishments use actual Gamay or Mondeuse. The best places will tell you exactly which wine and add Génépi instead of generic spirits. At a proper place, vin chaud should cost €8-12 and taste like wine, not cough syrup. Ask for 'vin chaud fait maison' (homemade mulled wine) and reject anything that arrives lukewarm.
