In 1630, young mercenaries returning from fighting in Burgundy smuggled Pinot Noir vine shoots back to Graubünden. Within SEVEN YEARS, 90% of all vines in Bündner Herrschaft had been replaced with Pinot Noir. That's not gradual adoption - that's a revolution. Walk the Bündner Rheintal Wine Hiking Trail between Malans and Jenins, find the historic marker showing 17th century land use, and take the photo looking south toward the Rhine with rows of Pinot Noir stretching to the river. Ask any vintner: "Did mercenaries really bring these vines?" You'll hear the story with pride.
🔄 BACKUP: If the trail marker is missing, go to Weingut von Salis in Maienfeld (Industriestrasse 18, open Mon-Sat). Ask at the counter about the "1630 mercenary legend." They have a display panel inside the tasting room.
