You're drinking Valais wine in a bar older than most countries. Find the back corner table with the view of the original 1879 cornerstone, order the Valais wine flight (3 wines, CHF 30) - request Fendant, Petite Arvine, Cornalin. Arrive 5pm-7pm for après-ski energy with locals celebrating, or 9pm-11pm for romantic candlelit vibe. Pair with oysters (CHF 5-8 each) - saline notes match Petite Arvine perfectly.

3. 3 Walk the Car-Free Streets - Listen to What 1931 Switzerland Chose History · Free

   Zermatt banned combustion engines in 1931 - NOT for environmental reasons (climate change wasn't a thing yet), but to preserve the view of the Matterhorn because exhaust obscured the mountain. Start at Zermatt train station and walk down Bahnhofstrasse toward the Matterhorn view, listening to what 92-year-old intentional design sounds like: snow crunching, cowbells, cable cars humming - but no engines, no horns. Walk Bahnhofstrasse end-to-end (15 min), turn left onto Kirchstrasse, pass Elsie's Wine Bar (built 1879 - older than the car ban), then find a bench with Matterhorn view for 10 minutes of silence that amplifies everything.

4. 4 Find the Graves of the Matterhorn First Ascent Victims History · Free · Optional

   July 14, 1865: Edward Whymper's team summited the Matterhorn - first ascent, but on descent, 4 of 7 climbers fell to their deaths. From Bahnhofstrasse, walk toward the Catholic church with the distinctive spire to find their graves behind the church: Michel Croz (French guide, age 35), Charles Hudson (English clergyman, age 36), Douglas Hadow (age 19). Lord Francis Douglas's body was never found - he has a memorial but no grave. Visit early morning (7am-9am) for quiet reflection, or sunset (6pm-8pm) when alpenglow hits the Matterhorn visible from the churchyard.

   Backup: After visiting graves, walk 2 min to Whymper Stube restaurant (Hotel Monte Rosa) where the team stayed the night before the climb. Have a drink in the room where they planned history's most famous mountaineering tragedy.
