This is not a cable car - it's a train climbing at angles that seem impossible, clinging to the mountainside on 126-year-old engineering that still runs daily. Take the 4:30pm departure for sunset arrival at the Gornergrat Railway station in Zermatt (10 min walk from main street). Buy round-trip ticket to Gornergrat summit (CHF 143 winter low season Nov-Apr, CHF 183 shoulder May-Jun/Sep-Oct, CHF 207 summer high Jul-Aug). Sit on the right side climbing up for best Matterhorn views.

   🔄 BACKUP: If sold out or weather closes the railway, take the Sunnegga funicular instead (8 min to 2,288m, cheaper, still spectacular Matterhorn views).

   Toast the Matterhorn at 3,100m - Restaurant vis-à-vis

   This is the moment - you're 1,500m above the vineyards, staring at the Matterhorn while drinking Valais wine. At Gornergrat summit (3,100m), exit the train and walk to Restaurant vis-à-vis inside 3100 Kulmhotel. Order a glass of Petite Arvine or Fendant (CHF 12-18/glass) and Alpine cheese plate (CHF 20-30). Watch sunset turn the Matterhorn pink then orange then purple - alpenglow at altitude. The wine is from valleys you can see below. The silence is broken only by clinking glasses and gasps when the light hits. Request window seat facing the Matterhorn, book ahead for dinner service, or walk in for drinks/snacks.

   Walk the Ridge - Find the Spot Where Only You and Matterhorn Exist

   At 3,100m, the air is thin (about 65% oxygen of sea level). Every step requires intention. But here's the magic: find the spot 50 meters past the main viewing platform where you're alone. Just you, the Matterhorn, and 29 four-thousanders visible in all directions (Monte Rosa, Lyskamm, Castor, Pollux). Exit the summit building, walk along the marked ridge trail heading toward the Gornergrat observatory. Bring a small bottle of Valais wine from the valley. Pour a splash on the snow as an offering to the mountain gods. Drink the rest slowly. This is what people climb for. Best time: sunrise (first train 8am) for empty ridge and golden light, or sunset for alpenglow.

   🔄 BACKUP: If weather is bad (fog, high winds), stay inside the restaurant and watch for breaks in clouds - the Matterhorn appears and disappears like magic.
