   Journey takes 45 minutes total with 2 changes: Zermatt → Furi → Trockener Steg → Klein Matterhorn (3,883m). From Trockener Steg, you climb through clouds for 8 minutes seeing nothing but white fog. Then BOOM - you break through at 3,800m into blinding sunshine with 38 four-thousanders in 3 countries spread below. The Matterhorn is so close you see individual rock faces. At the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable car base station in Zermatt (10 min walk from main street), buy round-trip to Klein Matterhorn (CHF 143 winter low Nov-Apr, CHF 183 shoulder May-Jun/Sep-Oct, CHF 207 summer high Jul-Aug). Take first cable car (8:30am) to avoid crowds and watch sunrise turn Matterhorn pink.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Klein Matterhorn is closed (storms, high winds), cable car still runs to Trockener Steg (2,939m) - spectacular views, indoor restaurant, cheaper ticket.

   Drink Wine Aged at Altitude Where Humans Can't Breathe

   The summit shop sells 'wine from the Alps, stored at high altitude' - bottles cellared at 3,883m in sub-zero temperatures with extreme UV exposure and thin air. No one knows exactly what this does to the wine. It's an experiment. At Klein Matterhorn summit (3,883m), find the summit shop and restaurant inside the station building. Buy a bottle (CHF 20-40) or order a glass at the summit restaurant (CHF 8-15). Ask staff: 'What makes high-altitude storage different?' Find the outdoor viewing platform, pour a glass, photograph the Matterhorn with wine in foreground. Drink slowly - altitude intensifies alcohol effects (you're at 60% oxygen of sea level). The mineral notes hit different at this altitude - is it the wine or your oxygen-starved brain? You'll never know.

   🔄 BACKUP: If summit shop is out of high-altitude wine, buy any Valais bottle from the valley (Coop supermarket in Zermatt, CHF 15-25) and bring it up yourself. Same view, same experience, less experimental aging.

   The Matterhorn Alpine Crossing opened July 2023 - world's highest cross-border cable car, named one of TIME's Greatest Places 2024. From Klein Matterhorn summit, take the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing cable car to Testa Grigia (3,480m) - the official Switzerland-Italy border point. Step across the painted line from Switzerland into Italy. No passport control. Just two countries, one mountain, two wine cultures meeting at the roof of Europe. You can continue to Cervinia, Italy for lunch with Valle d'Aosta wines (Hotel Hermitage has 1000+ bottle cellar, lunch €60-100), then cable car back by sunset. Extra ticket required (~CHF 20-30 beyond Klein Matterhorn ticket). Full crossing takes 90 min each way, best June-September.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you just want the border experience without full Italy crossing, ride to Testa Grigia, touch the border line, take a photo, and return to Klein Matterhorn summit (adds 30 min to your visit).

   Walk the Glacier Palace - Ice Caves at 3,883m

   You'll descend into ice caves carved 15 meters below the glacier surface - the highest ice palace in the world. Inside Klein Matterhorn summit station, follow signs to Glacier Palace entrance (included with cable car ticket, no extra fee). Walk through tunnels carved into 5,000-year-old glacial ice, passing ice sculptures of alpine animals and Swiss cultural icons. The ice is blue from compressed air bubbles, walls sparkle from refrozen meltwater. Temperature inside: -4°C year-round. You're walking through frozen history - this ice fell as snow when Egyptian pyramids were being built. Takes 20-30 minutes to walk the full circuit, slippery but handrails provided.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Glacier Palace is closed for maintenance (rare but happens), spend extra time on the outdoor viewing platform instead - 360° panorama, 38 peaks visible, best photo spot is the terrace on the Italian side.
