   Taste the Wine Built Back from Nothing

   ARPEPE is a family resurrection story told in glass.

   The name ARPEPE = ARturo PElizzatti PErego. In the 1970s, Arturo's father was diagnosed with cancer and the family was forced to sell the winery his great-great-grandfather Giovanni had built in the 1860s. In 1984, Arturo rebuilt from scratch under a new name: himself. In 2004, Arturo died of cancer. His three children took over and are now the benchmark producer for Alpine Nebbiolo in all of Europe. At ARPEPE winery (Via del Buon Consiglio 4, Sondrio), ask to taste the Sassella Riserva Rocce Rosse — Red Rocks, named for the granitic schist soil. This 4-hectare old-vine vineyard produces wine fermented with wild yeasts, aged 4+ years in massive neutral botti. Their vines require 1,500 hours of manual labor per hectare per year — six times more than Barolo. Book via info@arpepe.com, €40-80 per person.    Find the Fortress the Swiss Burned Then Occupied

   Castel Grumello is a 13th-century ruin surrounded by living Grumello DOCG vineyards. Entry is free. The history is a perfect irony.

   The De Piro family built Castel Grumello between the late 13th and early 14th century. In 1526, Swiss-aligned forces destroyed it completely, then governed this valley as overlords until 1797 — 285 years of occupation. The irony: they destroyed this castle, then replaced it with their own administration. Today the ruins sit inside working vineyards of the Grumello DOCG subzone — the same appellation as ARPEPE's Grumello Buon Consiglio wine, named for this very hill. From the castle walls (Via Sant'Antonio, Montagna in Valtellina, 7 minutes from Sondrio center), look east toward the entire Adda River valley and terraced slopes where Nebbiolo has grown since the 12th century. FREE entry, open March-September 10am-6pm. Bring the bottle of Grumello you bought at ARPEPE if you visited before.

   Decode All Four Subzones in One Room

   Chiavennasca, the local name for Nebbiolo, does NOT come from the town of Chiavenna — it comes from the dialect word ciuvinasca, meaning the grape best suited for winemaking. At Il Tabernario Enoteca delle Alpi (Via Zara 2/H, Sondrio), order one glass from each of the four Valtellina Superiore DOCG subzones: SASSELLA (benchmark quality, most elegant), GRUMELLO (softer, lavender and blueberries), INFERNO (smallest and hottest, 75% grade slopes called hell because of summer heat), VALGELLA (largest, most varied). Same grape, same valley, four completely different wines — 700 years of terrace construction making geological distinctions visible in a glass. Ask for una selezione delle quattro sottozone, budget €8-15 per glass. Pair with bresaola or sciatt (buckwheat fritters with melted Casera cheese). Mon-Thu 5:30pm-midnight, Fri-Sat 5:30pm-2am.
