Training runs (Thursday-Friday) are FREE to watch and the crowd energy is insane—cowbells, air horns, Austrian flags everywhere. Walk to the Hahnenkamm finish area (bottom of gondola, easy from town center) and stand behind the barriers to watch World Cup skiers navigate the Streif at 140 km/h. You'll see crashes, near-misses, and athletes who look genuinely terrified at the top of the Mausefalle. After each run, racers are interviewed in the finish area—you're 10 meters away from legends like Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, Marco Odermatt, Vincent Kriechmayr. Arrive by 10:30 AM for 11:30 AM training starts. Bring warm clothes, a flask of schnapps or Glühwein, and a cowbell. After training, walk through Kitzbühel's medieval old town—every bar has Hahnenkamm specials.
🔄 BACKUP: If training runs are cancelled due to weather, the race week culture still saturates the town. Visit Leo Hillinger bar (Hahnenkamm specials), walk the Streif course yourself (parallel route #21 is open to public), or attend the free concerts and street parties in old town (Thursday-Saturday nights).
