This 1910 Art Nouveau villa holds the moment that changed skiing forever. German industrialist Bernhard Trier built it as a retreat, then used it to convince local ski instructor Hannes Schneider to teach his revolutionary technique worldwide. Post-WWII, it served as French military HQ. Now a museum with Karl Schranz's 1962 Kneissls, historic equipment, and the restaurant where Felicity Jones filmed "Chalet Girl" (2011).

   In 1910, German industrialist Bernhard Trier built this Art Nouveau villa and became patron to a young ski instructor named Hannes Schneider. In the main hall of Villa Trier (now Museum St. Anton on Rudi-Matt-Weg), Trier convinced Schneider to teach the Arlberg technique worldwide - transforming skiing from niche alpine activity to global sport. Pay museum entry (€5-7), ask for the English guide sheet, and stand in the main salon imagining that world-changing conversation.

   Backup: If the museum is closed, the exterior architecture alone tells part of the story - look for the original Trier family crest.

2. 2 Find Karl Schranz's 1962 Kneissls History · Free

   In the ski equipment room on the upper floor, Karl Schranz - local hero, 2x World Cup champion (1969-70), and the man with photos alongside Audrey Hepburn, Queen Elizabeth II, and Jean-Claude Killy - donated his 1962 Kneissls. These wooden skis with leather bindings raced down the Hahnenkamm and won World Cups. Note how different equipment was, yet these conquered mountains.

   Backup: Schranz himself often visits his eponymous hotel in the village - you might find him there telling stories over wine.

3. 3 Dine Where "Chalet Girl" Was Filmed Wine · Price: moderate · Optional

   The 2011 film "Chalet Girl" starring Felicity Jones used Villa Trier as a primary location. Now the ground floor houses Museum Restaurant serving refined Austrian cuisine with excellent wines. Order the Wiener Schnitzel (described as "one of the best") paired with Austrian Grüner Veltliner. Book in advance for dinner; request the corner table for the best period atmosphere.
