   Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938) founded Die Brücke, launching 20th-century Expressionism. He arrived in Davos January 19, 1917 - fleeing WWI breakdown and Berlin's chaos. Then came 1933: Nazis branded his work "degenerate." 1937: 600+ of his works sold or destroyed. June 15, 1938: he shot himself in Frauenkirch, disturbed by the Anschluss, fearing Germany would invade Switzerland. Weapons experts NOW say it may have been murder, not suicide. Read the timeline at the Kirchner Museum Davos entrance hall. Look for the date 1933 (Nazi persecution begins) and 1938 (death). Ask yourself: if 600 of your life's works were destroyed, could you keep painting?

   Backup: If the biographical section is minimal, search "Kirchner degenerate art" on your phone while in the museum. The Nazi exhibition catalog listed his works alongside labels mocking them.

2. 2 Witness Mountains Painted by a Man Fleeing Death History · Price: low

   Kirchner painted Davos mountains in VIBRANT, almost violent colors - yellows, purples, electric blues. These aren't peaceful Alpine postcards. These are mountains seen by a man who fled Berlin's dark Expressionism for Switzerland, seeking peace but finding only temporary escape. In the main gallery rooms, stand in front of one Alpine landscape for 60 seconds. Notice the colors aren't NATURAL - they're EMOTIONAL. The mountains he saw were filtered through trauma, addiction recovery, and the fear that Nazis would follow him here (they did, in 1938's shadow). He was trying to paint himself SANE.

   Kirchner lived in Frauenkirch (5km from Davos center). The mountains he obsessively painted - Tinzenhorn, Piz Linard, Sertig Valley peaks - are VISIBLE from Davos. Exit the museum and face the mountains Kirchner painted. Identify one peak in a Kirchner painting (ask museum staff to confirm which mountain it depicts). Find that peak in real life. Compare: Kirchner's electric yellows vs actual snow, his angular slopes vs actual curves. The gap between his painting and reality = the gap in his mind.

   Backup: If weather is poor (mountains obscured), the museum shop sells postcards showing the actual mountains next to Kirchner's versions. Same effect, dry feet.

Order a glass of Bündner Herrschaft Pinot Noir at any wine bar in Davos (Montana Stube, Alte Post). Smell dark cherry, earth, Alpine herbs. Think: Kirchner drank wine from this valley while painting mountains that don't look like reality but FEEL like truth.

   Backup: If wine bars are closed, buy a bottle from a Davos shop and drink it in your hotel room with a Kirchner postcard from the museum shop. Same ritual, private ceremony.
