   Find the Church Where Menuhin Launched His Festival in 1957

   This church was first mentioned in 1228, rebuilt in late Gothic style 1444-1447, and consecrated by the bishop of Marseille in 1447. The choir has murals painted around 1470 depicting Old Testament scenes. Then in 1556, the Reformation hit - altars and statues were demolished. In 1957, violinist Yehudi Menuhin chose THIS church to launch his classical music festival with 2 concerts. Now it hosts 50+ concerts every summer. Enter St. Mauritius Church in Saanen village center (the Gothic bell tower is visible from most streets). Walk to the choir and study the 1470 murals - they survived the Reformation somehow. Look for signs of demolition from 1556 where Catholic elements were removed. Ask if there's a pamphlet about Menuhin's first concerts here - locals are proud of this history.

Find a local Stübli (small traditional restaurant) in Saanen - ask locals 'Wo trinken die Einheimischen?' (Where do locals drink?). Order a glass of local wine - ask 'Was trinken Sie hier?' (What do you drink here?). The answer will be a Bernese white (Müller-Thurgau) or red (Pinot Noir) that costs CHF 5-8, not CHF 100+. Sit at the wood table, listen to Swiss German conversations around you, and observe: this is Gstaad before it became Gstaad.
