   Ride the World's Highest Subway Through a Mountain

   In 1984, after workers lived at Felskinn for 3+ years drilling through solid rock, Switzerland opened the world's highest funicular and the world's highest subway. Take Alpin Express cable car from Saas-Fee village to Felskinn station (2,980m), then board Metro Alpin for a 4.5-minute ride through complete darkness, climbing 1,447 meters through the mountain to emerge at 3,456m like a miner who struck gold. When the doors open, you're standing inside a glacier.

   Walk Through 1,000-Year-Old Ice in the World's Biggest Grotto

   Glaciologist Benedikt Schnyder carved 5,500 square meters inside the Fee Glacier - the world's largest artificial ice grotto. Exit Metro Alpin at Mittelallalin station and follow the 70m gallery to walk through frozen time. The ice around you is over 1,000 years old - it froze when Walser people were first migrating to Saas-Fee. Touch the walls (allowed) - they're slick, ancient, and impossibly blue. Dress warm - it's a glacier, not a metaphor.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the Ice Pavilion is closed for maintenance, the revolving restaurant is next door and still worth the Metro Alpin journey.

   Drink Fendant While the Restaurant Spins 360 Degrees

   In 1 hour, this restaurant rotates 360 degrees at 3,500m - the world's highest revolving restaurant. Order Fendant (CHF 8-12 per glass) - the Valais aperitif wine, light, elegant, mineral-driven, perfect at altitude. Sit near the windows, mark a landmark when you sit down - the Dom, the Täschhorn - and watch it disappear and reappear as you complete the circle. The experience is the point, not Michelin stars - you're drinking wine while the Alps rotate around you.

   Spot the Mattmark Dam Where 88 Lives Were Buried in 1965

   On August 30, 1965, the Allalin glacier tongue collapsed onto the Mattmark dam construction site - 2 million cubic meters of ice and debris buried 88 workers. From the revolving restaurant's panoramic windows, look north toward the Saas Valley and ask staff to point out Mattmark Dam. You can see it from here - a stark reminder that these mountains don't forgive mistakes. The glacier you just walked through killed 88 people.
