   In 950 AD, the Abbot of Pfäfers Monastery laid foundation stones for this castle and vineyard at Schloss Salenegg, Maienfeld (2h 47min train from St. Moritz via Chur, CHF 50-100). These cellar walls predate the Crusades, predate Oxford University (1096), predate the freaking Magna Carta (1215). Wine has been documented here since 1068. Book the Friday 3pm or first Saturday 2pm tour in advance (email via graubuenden.ch), find the oldest stone sections in the cellar, and ask your guide: "Which walls date to 950 AD?" Touch them — you're touching what monks touched during the Dark Ages.

   In 1630, Burgundy mercenaries fighting in the Thirty Years' War brought Pinot Noir cuttings to Graubünden — a gamble that created "Swiss Burgundy" in the Bündner Herrschaft wine region. Schloss Salenegg has been making Pinot Noir "for many generations" since. In their tasting room, request a Pinot Noir vertical (multiple vintages) and ask: "Which style is closest to how you made it in the 1600s?" Try their traditional Pinot Noir alongside modern styles — taste the lineage from Burgundy to here.

   Hike the vineyard perimeter with a 1,074-year-old perspective.

   These vines at Schloss Salenegg occupy the EXACT land the Pfäfers Monastery abbot planted in 950 AD. The mountains you see are the mountains HE saw. The Rhine Valley below is unchanged (topographically) — you're standing in a 1,000-year time capsule. Walk the perimeter of the vineyard slowly, look for the oldest grapevines (ask staff which rows are oldest), face the Rhine Valley, close your eyes, then open them. This view hasn't changed in a millennium.

   🔄 BACKUP: If vineyards are closed (harvest season), walk around castle exterior. The castle itself dates to this era - the architecture tells the story even if you can't enter vines.
