   Hike the Verbier-to-Col de Vaux Section (The Gateway)

   This is the Haute Route's 'gateway' section out of Verbier - you're literally walking in the footsteps of Kurz and Roget (1911) and every alpinist since. The trail climbs from Verbier (1,500m) toward Col de Vaux (2,200m+) through meadows and moraines. From Médran gondola base, follow 'Cabane Mont Fort' signs (red-white markers). Even walking this section for 30 min gives you the vibe: the physical effort, the altitude, the transition from town to wilderness. Push all the way to Col de Vaux (2hr+) and look BACK at Verbier below you - that's the perspective shift every Haute Route skier experiences.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you can't hike, take the cable car to Les Ruinettes and walk the flat section toward Cabane Mont Fort. Same trail, less vertical. Or just stand in Verbier and watch Haute Route skiers pass through - they're unmistakable (huge packs, skins on skis, determined faces).

   Taste Wine at Cabane Mont Fort Like Haute Route Alpinists

   'Every mountain hut along the way pours Valais wine' - this is the Haute Route tradition. Cabane Mont Fort (2,475m) has 'a good selection of regional wine' including Fendant (white, crisp) and Cornalin (red, nearly extinct in 1970s, now the greatest of Valais reds). Hike to the hut via Les Ruinettes (1.5hr) and order wine by the glass (€8-12) or bottle at the communal tables. Ask your neighbor: 'Are you doing the Haute Route?' You'll hear stories about glacier crossings, whiteouts, crampon malfunctions, and perfect powder. This is how alpinism works - you're drinking the same wine they drank in 1911, in the same spot.

They'll point it out - it's part of the hut's history (many Haute Route skiers stop here). Trace the line from Chamonix through Verbier to Zermatt with your finger: 180km, 11 glaciers, 6 days.
