On August 27, 1893, Swiss industrialist Adolf Guyer-Zeller was hiking above Mürren with his daughter when he saw the new Wengernalp Railway and had a vision: a railway THROUGH the Eiger and Mönch mountains to the top. Construction began July 27, 1896. It took 16 years, dynamited 7+ km through solid rock, killed 30 workers (mostly Italian), and injured 90 more. Guyer-Zeller died of a heart attack in April 1899 - he never saw the completion. Find the memorial plaques or historic exhibits inside Jungfraujoch station at 3,454m near the arrival platform honoring the 30 workers who died and 90 injured (mostly in blasting accidents). Read the names if listed. Every tunnel meter cost sweat, blood, and lives. Guyer-Zeller gambled his fortune and died before seeing the result. You rode up in comfort on his dream.
🔄 BACKUP: If the memorial isn't visible, ask station staff about "Adolf Guyer-Zeller" and the "30 workers who died." They'll point you to exhibits or tell the story - every employee knows the railway's tragic construction history.
