Byron wrote: "It was the Staubach and the Jungfrau...that made me write Manfred." Walk to Staubbach Falls viewing area (5 minutes from Lauterbrunnen center, just outside the village center - visible from the train station). Look up at the 300m drop. Notice how the water turns to mist before hitting the ground - that's the "horse tail" Byron saw. In summer, follow the trail that goes BEHIND the waterfall (30-minute detour, uphill). You'll stand inside the rock alcove with water falling in front of you.

   "Lauterbrunnen" means "many fountains" or "clear springs" in German. Locals say there are 72 waterfalls cascading into the valley at the height of snowmelt (spring/early summer). The valley is U-shaped - carved by glaciers - with vertical cliff walls perfect for waterfalls. Start at Lauterbrunnen village and walk the valley trail toward the head of the valley (direction: Stechelberg). As you walk, scan the cliffs on both sides. Count every waterfall you spot - big, small, seasonal, permanent. Some are obvious (wide, thundering). Others are thin ribbons visible only in good light. Bring binoculars for distant falls. You probably won't reach 72 unless it's peak melt (May-June), but the attempt teaches you to see the valley's hidden hydrology.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you don't want to hike the full valley, walk just the first 1-2 km from Lauterbrunnen. You'll see 10-15 waterfalls easily. Or take the bus to Stechelberg (valley head) and count from there. The 72 number is traditional - even locals debate the exact count.
