   At Testa Grigia (3,480m) - the highest border crossing in Europe - find the painted line marking where Switzerland meets Italy. Step across it and you've entered Italy with no passport control, just two wine cultures meeting at the roof of the Alps. Take the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing cable car from Zermatt to Klein Matterhorn, then continue to this official border crossing point (CHF 125-150 round-trip). The crossing opened July 2023 and was named one of TIME's Greatest Places 2024. Photograph the moment you step across the border line.

   Order Valais Fendant on the Swiss side at Klein Matterhorn summit before crossing, then descend to Cervinia (Italy) for Valle d'Aosta wine tasting. Hotel Hermitage in Cervinia has a 1,000+ bottle cellar with tastings from €70/person - try Petit Rouge (same grape family as Swiss wines, different country). The comparison reveals how terroir differs on opposite sides of the same mountain: Swiss wines tend lighter and more mineral; Italian wines slightly fuller.    Time your return via Cervinia cable car station for late afternoon to watch sunset turn the Matterhorn pink/orange from the Italian side - the mountain looks completely different from Italy, sharper and more dramatic. Check the last cable car time (changes seasonally) and aim to be at Testa Grigia border station around golden hour (5-6pm summer, 4-5pm winter).    🔄 BACKUP: If you miss sunset timing, the views are spectacular at any hour. The crossing itself is the experience.
