At Zermatt Mountaineers' Cemetery (Kirchplatz, behind the Catholic church with the distinctive spire), find their graves in the mountaineers' section with signs pointing the way. The cemetery is always open - spend 20-30 minutes reading inscriptions in German, French, English. The dates tell stories of climbers who died at 23, some at 40, all doing what they loved.

   Read the Inscriptions at Sunset

   Time your visit to the graves for sunset (6pm-8pm summer, 4pm-6pm winter) to read what families wrote for their lost climbers while the Matterhorn - the mountain that killed them - glows pink in alpenglow. Standing at the graves in Zermatt Mountaineers' Cemetery, face the inscriptions (Michel Croz's stone says he 'perished on the Matterhorn,' Douglas Hadow was 19 years old), then turn around. The same peak they died climbing watches over their resting place. Let that juxtaposition sink in.

   The 1865 team isn't alone in Zermatt Mountaineers' Cemetery - find graves of other climbers, guides, mountaineers, ski legends scattered throughout. Walk beyond the main graves for 10-15 minutes and count how many headstones show climbing-related deaths. Notice dates clustering around certain eras - early 1900s, the 1930s-40s 'Golden Age,' modern accidents. This village lives with death because it lives with mountains. Every climber here chose this path knowing the risks.
