   On January 1, 2026, Slovenian ski jumper Domen Prevc won here during the Four Hills Tournament — the second stop in ski jumping's most prestigious annual event — but this 140-meter hill was built for the 1936 Winter Olympics, Hitler's Olympics. Birger Ruud, the Norwegian ski jumper, won gold here in front of Hitler, later joined the Norwegian resistance, was imprisoned at Grini concentration camp in 1943, released in 1944, and kept fighting Nazis until liberation. Walk to the Große Olympiaschanze (20 minutes from Garmisch-Partenkirchen town center or bus to Skistadion stop) and stand at the base looking UP at the inrun tower — the same structure from 1936 where Hitler watched and propaganda met Alpine reality.

   Backup: If visiting during Four Hills Tournament (Dec 31-Jan 1), tickets are required but the atmosphere is electric - 20,000+ fans, fireworks, bratwurst, beer, and the world's best jumpers flying overhead.

   In 1935, Garmisch and Partenkirchen were two SEPARATE villages that REJECTED the vote to merge — Hitler forced it anyway on January 1, 1935, exactly one year before the Olympics, to create a resort town big enough to host the Winter Games. To this day, 91 years later, they maintain SEPARATE ski clubs, yodel clubs, fire brigades, and festival weeks. Start at Marienplatz in Garmisch (modern, touristy, ski shops, hotels), then walk 15 minutes east along Partnachstraße to Ludwigstraße in Partenkirchen (lüftlmalerei painted facades, traditional Gasthöfe, quieter, older). The contrast IS the story — two identities that Hitler couldn't erase, only force together.

   Backup: If you only have time for one square, walk Ludwigstraße in Partenkirchen — the lüftlmalerei facades are the visual defiance of the forced merger.

   This Gasthof has a lüftlmalerei facade painted by Heinrich Bickel in 1949 — AFTER the war, AFTER the Olympics, AFTER the forced merger stuck — showing a Bavarian wedding scene as his post-war statement of "You forced us to merge, but our traditions survive." Sit at a wooden table inside or in the beer garden at Gasthof Fraundorfer (Ludwigstraße 24, Partenkirchen, open Mon/Wed-Sun, closed Tuesdays) and order a glass of Franconian Silvaner — Bavaria's wine rebellion in beer country. Pair with Käsespätzle (€9-12), look at the wedding scene through the window, and toast: "Für Partenkirchen - gezwungen zu verschmelzen, aber niemals besiegt" (For Partenkirchen - forced to merge, but never defeated).

   Backup: If Fraundorfer is closed (Tuesdays) or full, walk to any Gasthof on Ludwigstraße with painted facades. The act of drinking wine in Partenkirchen (not Garmisch) is the statement.
