   At 2,037 meters on the Fellhorn summit ridge, you can ski or hike across the Germany-Austria border without passport checks, customs, or even a sign - the Fellhorn-Kanzelwand ski area spans 36km across two countries with one lift pass. Take Fellhornbahn cable car from Oberstdorf valley station (season: Dec 5, 2025 - Apr 6, 2026 for skiing; summer for hiking), exit at the top station, and follow the ridge trail toward Kanzelwand where at some point in the next 500 meters you cross from Germany to Austria with no marker - just use GPS or keep walking until you reach an Austrian hut and hear Austrian German dialect.

   🔄 BACKUP: If weather closes the summit, visit the Fellhornbahn valley station information desk. Ask to see photos of the border ridge - they have exhibits showing the ski area's two-country layout.

   Taste Austria Without Leaving Your Ski Run

   You skied from Germany into Austria and can now stop at Adlerhorst mountain hut (Austrian side) for the ultimate brag: Grüner Veltliner and Kaiserschmarrn (Emperor Franz Joseph's favorite shredded pancake) before skiing back to Germany. Order "Grüner Veltliner und Kaiserschmarrn, bitte" - the crisp, peppery wine pairs perfectly with the sweet pancake dusted with powdered sugar and served with plum compote. The large sun deck offers panoramic views while you drink Austrian wine 2km from the Austrian border, then ski back to Germany afterward.

   🔄 BACKUP: If huts are closed or too crowded, buy Austrian wine at Adlerhorst's outdoor kiosk (summer) and drink it on the sun deck while looking at Germany across the ridge.

   Ski Germany's Longest Run, Then Count the Countries You Crossed

   The Fellhorn ski area offers one of the Allgäu's longest descents, but the real story is crossing an international border three times (out, in, out) in a single run without showing ID. Buy your Fellhorn-Kanzelwand lift pass at Oberstdorf valley station (+49 8322 9600-0), ride Fellhornbahn to summit, ski or hike toward Kanzelwand (Austria), cross the invisible border, touch an Austrian hut for physical proof, then ski/hike back to German side and descend to Oberstdorf valley - that's three border crossings with zero customs checks, which is what the EU actually means.

   🔄 BACKUP: If skiing/hiking isn't your thing, just ride the Fellhornbahn cable car to summit, walk 100 meters along the ridge toward Austria, turn around. You've technically crossed the border (the cable car top station is very close to it). Still counts.
