Kleinwalsertal - Austrian valley you can only reach from Germany

Geographic oddity: Kleinwalsertal is legally Austrian but geographically accessible only from Germany. Mountains completely surround it on the Austrian side. Drive 20 minutes from Oberstdorf and you're in Austria drinking Austrian wines, paying in euros, eating Wiener Schnitzel - but the only way home is back through Germany. The valley's Walser people migrated here from Switzerland in the 1300s, creating a cultural pocket frozen in time.

   This is geography's greatest prank: Kleinwalsertal is AUSTRIAN (Vorarlberg province, Bregenz district) but has NO road connection to Austria. Mountains completely surround it on the Austrian side, so the ONLY way in or out is through GERMANY. Drive south from Oberstdorf center 20 minutes on B19 road into Riezlern, watching for the moment when road signs switch from German to Austrian styles — that's your border crossing, completely invisible, no checkpoint. For 700+ years, this valley has been Austrian by law, German by necessity. The stats: Settled by Walser people from Swiss Valais around 1270-1300, using German marks as currency until 1995. Park at Walserplatz, walk to St. Josef church (built 1463), and realize you're standing on Austrian ground you could only reach from Germany.

   You STARTED in Oberstdorf (GERMANY), DROVE on a German road (B19), CROSSED into Austria (Kleinwalsertal) without a checkpoint, and you're now standing in AUSTRIA — but the only way to LEAVE Austria and return to Austria proper is to HIKE over mountains because there's NO ROAD CONNECTION to the rest of Vorarlberg. Stand in Riezlern Walserplatz and open Google Maps: Kleinwalsertal is surrounded by Austrian mountains, but the ONLY road goes through Germany. Drive to Baad village (20 minutes south) and see mountains blocking your path to Austria — that's the end of the road. Turn around, drive back to Germany, and count: 2 countries, zero checkpoints, 1 geographic absurdity. This is a "functional exclave" that used German currency for 104 years (1891-1995).

   Backup: If you want PROOF you were in Austria, buy something in Riezlern and get a receipt - it'll show Austrian VAT and Austrian business registration. That's your evidence.
