The OLDEST WINE PRESS ON EARTH. Not "one of the oldest" - THE oldest. Archaeologists found this 3,500-year-old Minoan wine press at Vathypetro archaeological site, 5km south of Peza, proving viticulture on Crete predates Homer, predates the Phoenicians, predates everything except the Egyptians. When you reach the site (follow signs from village square), find the wine press installation in the western section. Touch the stone channels, then look up at the vineyards on the slopes - they're STILL HERE, 3,500 years later. Read the plaque that calls this "proof of continuous viticulture" - wine has never stopped flowing from this mountain.
π BACKUP: If the site is closed for excavation, head to the Archaeological Collection of Archanes museum in the village (Tzami district, neoclassical building). Founded by THE archaeologists who discovered the palace complex, they have reconstructions and finds from Vathypetro. Ask the staff about the wine press - they'll share excavation stories.
