   George Skouras went to the University of Dijon in 1980, worked in Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, and Beaujolais - then came home to Argos, one of Europe's oldest cities, and started over.

   In 1980, a young man from Argos left for Dijon to study agriculture. He encountered Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, worked alongside winemakers in four French regions, and had a moment of recognition - his ancient homeland was being wasted on bulk wine. He came back in 1982, founded this domaine in 1986, and the French oak barrels in this cellar are not an affectation. Look for any framed photo, text panel, or founder story in the winery corridor - during the tour, ask: 'When George came back from France, what did people here think of his approach?' The answer will tell you everything about how much courage this took in 1986 Greece.

   At over 3,400 feet elevation, the Skouras vineyards at Pyrgela are among the highest red wine sites on the entire European continent.

   The number is 3,400 feet. For context: Barolo in Piedmont sits mostly under 2,000 feet. Châteauneuf-du-Pape barely reaches 700. The reason Skouras can grow Aghiorgitiko at this altitude - and have it retain the acidity that makes Megas Oenos age for 20 years - is because the Argolid mountains create something extraordinary. Ask the tasting room staff about the Pyrgela vineyard block or look toward the hills from the property. If you can see the hillside vineyards from anywhere on the estate, the Argolic Gulf is visible in the distance on clear days.

   Aghiorgitiko means 'grape of Saint George' in Greek. It has grown in the Nemea valley since at least the Mycenaean period - the same civilization that built the walls of Tiryns visible 15 minutes from here. When you taste it alone, you get dark cherry, low acidity, velvety tannins - beautiful, soft, sometimes almost too easy. During the tasting, taste the single-varietal first if possible, then the Megas Oenos blend second. Ask: 'What does the Cabernet Sauvignon give the Aghiorgitiko that it doesn't have on its own?'
