   Find the Altar Where Wine Decided the Games

   The libation ritual that opened every Olympiad

   Before a single athlete competed, wine was poured at the Altar of Zeus in the Altis (sacred precinct) - the large raised mound of ash northwest of the Temple of Zeus ruins. Not optional ceremony - this WAS the Games beginning. City-states pouring wine and announcing 'we have made libation' declared the Olympic Truce, suspending warfare across Greece. Every four years, wine stopped wars for an entire civilization. Stand at the altar mound, look toward the Temple columns, and ask: how many litres of wine were poured here across 1,200 years of Olympic Games?

   🔄 BACKUP: If the altar area is cordoned, view it from the Temple of Zeus colonnade - the sacred sight lines haven't changed in 2,500 years.

   Run the Track Where Wine-Fuelled Athletes Competed

   These Olympic athletes drank wine. Hippocrates - THE Hippocrates - prescribed getting drunk 'once or twice to cure sore muscles' of competing Olympians. Stimulant herbs mixed into wine were early doping nobody banned. Athletes followed strict wine rules: 'sparingly, no cold water, only at certain times.' The Stadium track (192.27 metres, enter through the original stone tunnel on the Altis east side) held 45,000 spectators on grass banks. Walk through the tunnel athletes used, stand at the starting line (stone sills still visible), and picture that wine-fueled crowd.

   Locate the Name That Means 'Wine-Fury'

   The founding myth of the Olympics has wine in its etymology

   King OINOMAOS - break it down: 'oinos' (wine) + 'maos' (battle/fury) = 'Wine-Fury' - was the founding myth king whose defeat created the Olympics. Pelops beat Wine-Fury in a chariot race, married his daughter, gave his name to the entire peninsula: 'Peloponnesus' means 'Island of Pelops.' The Temple of Zeus ruins (eastern Altis side) show this story on the east pediment. Greece's biggest peninsula is named after the man who defeated Wine-Fury. Find any site map showing the east pediment scene and trace the story: Oinomaos loses → Pelops wins → Olympics born → Peloponnese named.

   Touch the Workshop Where Phidias Built a Wonder

   The studio of history's greatest sculptor, beside the temple

   In Phidias' Workshop (rectangular foundation southwest of Temple of Zeus), the greatest sculptor built the 40-foot-tall Statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders. The building was intentionally built to match the Temple's inner sanctuary dimensions so Phidias could check proportions at full scale. The museum displays his personal wine jug (oenochoe) found in this workshop, inscribed to prove ownership. That obsessive attention to detail - and the wine jug waiting for day's end - produced a Wonder of the World.
