   Find the Infant Dionysus Being Carried to Safety

   The museum's crown jewel - and the most direct Dionysian artifact in all of Greece

   Praxiteles carved this in the 4th century BC: Hermes carrying the infant Dionysus - the god of wine himself - to the nymphs for safekeeping after Zeus hid him from Hera's wrath. This marble captures the exact moment of baby Dionysus being delivered to safety. In the Olympia Archaeological Museum's central hall (€14 combined ticket covers both site and museum), approach the Parian marble slowly - the whitest quarried in the ancient world. Look at Hermes' draped cloak detail, the infant's reaching arms. This is what made Praxiteles antiquity's most celebrated sculptor. A 2,400-year-old statue of baby Dionysus at the birthplace of the Olympics - you are in exactly the right place.

   Hold the Story of the World's Richest Bronze Collection

   The bronze room - no collection like it exists anywhere on earth

   This is the richest collection of ancient bronze in the world. Not 'one of' - THE richest. Pilgrims brought cauldrons the size of bathtubs, griffins with fierce eyes, warriors mid-swing as offerings to Zeus across 1,200 years. Each object was worth a fortune when dedicated - athletes gave their most valuable possessions to the victory-giving god. In the bronze collection rooms, look for cauldrons with griffin handles (prestige objects traded from Greece to Persia to Etruria), then find a figurine small enough to hold - what ordinary Greeks brought when prayers were answered. The scale of devotion across 12 centuries fills this entire room.

   Locate Phidias' Wine Jug

   The master sculptor's personal oenochoe - wine vessel of the man who built a Wonder

   Phidias built the Statue of Zeus - 40 feet tall, gold and ivory, one of the Seven Wonders - and his personal wine jug was found in his workshop at Olympia. In the Phidias Workshop collection, look for the small inscribed ceramic vessel (oenochoe) with other workshop finds. The inscription 'Pheidias eimi' ('I belong to Phidias') is direct proof. The greatest sculptor in ancient Greece kept a wine jug at his workbench. Whatever you think wine is for, it was also for making Wonders. This is not a replica - it's the actual object from the actual workshop.

   Decode the Chariot Race That Named a Peninsula

   The east pediment - the founding myth in marble, with a wine etymology hiding in plain sight

   The east pediment (c. 460 BC) shows King OINOMAOS - 'Wine-Fury' (oinos = wine, maos = battle-fury) - and Pelops preparing for the chariot race that created the Olympics. Wine-Fury challenged suitors to race for his daughter's hand, executing losers. Pelops cheated, won, married Hippodamia, founded the Games, and gave his name to the entire peninsula: Peloponnese = 'Island of Pelops.' In the central hall's dramatic full-scale display, find Zeus between the two competitors, then identify Oinomaos on Zeus' right. Everything on your Dionysian journey connects back to this wine-named king's defeat.
