   Find the Spot Where Athens Sold Its Wine

   The southeast corner of the Agora held a dedicated wine-selling district, excavated and dated to 430-400 BCE.

   Archaeologists found a concentrated wine-selling area here dated 430-400 BCE — balance weights, amphora fragments, and dipinti (painted inscriptions listing prices and origins) that document wine commerce where Socrates would have walked past merchants hawking Chian and Thasian wine by name. Enter the Agora site from the Adrianou St gate and walk southeast toward the lower excavated areas near the South Stoa foundations. Stand at the southeast excavations and look for information panels marking the commercial zone — read about transport amphoras with handles stamped with islands of origin, effectively the world's first wine labels.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the southeast area is closed for excavation work, the Stoa of Attalos museum (included in entry) displays recovered amphora handles with stamps — ask museum staff to point you to the commercial finds case.

   Locate the Stoa Where 42 Shops Once Sold Everything

   The reconstructed Stoa of Attalos is 120 metres wide, 2 storeys, and originally housed 42 shops — wine, spices, perfume, meat, fish.

   This isn't a ruin — the Stoa of Attalos was fully reconstructed 1953-1956 using original materials where possible. The 42 original shops (21 per floor) hosted 4th-5th century BCE merchants selling wine alongside fruits, pottery, perfume, and meat, with a Dionysus statue standing in the Agora itself. The long colonnaded building runs the full east side of the Agora with the museum inside (included in €8/€4 entry). Walk the full ground-floor colonnade and count the columns (45 Doric outside, 22 Ionic inside), then find the case displaying symposium equipment: kylikes (shallow two-handled drinking cups) and oinochoai (wine jugs).

   🔄 BACKUP: The museum pamphlet (free at entry) has a map marking the wine-selling zone on the Agora plan — worth picking up before you walk the site.

   Read the Name of the Festival That Shut Down the City for Dionysus

   The Agora hosted the City Dionysia — Athens' annual festival for the god of wine — where all courts closed, prisoners were freed, and 10,000 citizens drank communally.

   Before Agrippa's concert hall was built in 15 BCE, this central space was the beating heart of the City Dionysia — every spring, Athens halted, courts closed, prisoners were temporarily freed, and the city drank for Dionysus. The festival began HERE in the Agora with processions and ritual wine pouring, then moved to the Theatre of Dionysus. Find the giant torso/caryatid figures near the Odeion entrance (mid-Agora) and look at the information panel for the site's pre-Agrippa history. Stand facing the Acropolis and trace the festival procession route with your eyes: Agora → up toward the Theatre on the southern Acropolis slope.

   Hunt the Combo Ticket That Unlocks Six Sites for the Price of One

   The €30 combo ticket covers 7 Athens archaeological sites valid for 5 consecutive days — the Agora is the ideal starting point.

   For €30 you unlock the Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Tower of Winds, Kerameikos, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian's Library, and Aristotle's Lyceum — 7 sites, valid 5 days. The individual price for all 7 in summer is €56, so that's a €26 saving on sites that all connect to the Dionysian wine story. Buy at the ticket booth at the Agora entrance (Adrianou St gate, near Monastiraki Metro) and ask specifically for the 'kombinezon' (combo ticket). Write the expiry date on the ticket in pen immediately — it's easy to forget you have 5 days.
