Count the agricultural layers: wheat fields, olive groves, vineyards. This land has been farmed continuously for over 3,000 years.

   Taste Boeotian Plain Wine in Tanagra's Agricultural Shadow

   Tanagra sits in the PGI Thebes wine zone. The same fertile plain that made the terracotta figurines famous also produces grapes.

   The Boeotian plain surrounding Tanagra grows Savvatiano — Greece's most widely planted grape, the original base for retsina, producing clean, fresh whites when grown with care. Local farmers have grown Savvatiano here for centuries, adapted to hot, dry Boeotian summers. In the village of Schimatari, enter any kafeneion on the main street and order 'ena potiri aspro topiko' (a glass of local white wine). Pair with olives, cheese, bread. Ask: 'Is this wine from around here?' — they'll say yes with local pride.
