Today: Greece's largest ski area, 19 runs across 36 km, all levels, summit café at 2,000m. The mountain chose ecstasy both times. At Parnassus Ski Center near Arachova (two base areas: Kelaria and Fterolakka), buy a day pass and find one run where you can go slowly, looking at fir forests, rocky ridges, the Gulf of Corinth visible in the distance — the landscape the Thyiades saw.

   Taste Mavroudi After the Slopes in Arachova

   Greeks finish their ski day with wine in Arachova's tavernas. Mavroudi, the deep-red mountain wine of Parnassus, is the apres-ski drink that Dionysus would have approved.

   After a day at altitude, exhausted and cold, Arachova tavernas fill with skiers drinking Mavroudi — the indigenous red grape of Mount Parnassus — alongside saganaki and grilled meat. This is Dionysian revery in modern form: physical exhaustion + wine + warmth after cold = the altered state the ancient Thyiades engineered on the same mountain. Walk from the ski center to Lakka Square (10-minute drive, taxis available). Order mavroudi by asking 'topiko kokkino krassi' and Formaella saganaki. Stay past 8pm — the atmosphere intensifies after the second glass, and tavernas sometimes erupt in dancing.

   🔄 BACKUP: Any taverna on the Arachova main road stocks local wines. The ski resort's base cafés also serve wine, though the village experience is superior.

   Find the Fir Forest at the Treeline — Ancient Parnassus

   Parnassus' Cephalonian fir forest has covered these slopes since antiquity. Walk into it. The Thyiades ran through trees exactly like these.

   Cephalonian fir (Abies cephalonica) creates dense, resin-scented forests on Parnassus above 800m. When Pausanias described the Thyiades 'raving on the heights of Parnassus,' he meant these forests, these ridges, these rocky clearings. Walking into the fir forest is the closest physical experience of ancient maenad worship's setting. Park at any forest clearing off the Arachova-ski center road and walk 200m into the treeline. Stand still. Smell the sharp, clean resin from the firs. Count rings on fallen trees — they can live 200-300 years, layering generation on generation.

   🔄 BACKUP: In winter, the forest is accessible from outer ski pistes. In summer, hiking trails from Arachova pass through the forest zone directly.
