Take the ferry from Kavala port (every 30-60 minutes in summer, 35-minute crossing) to an island that was the Napa Valley of the ancient world. On the ferry, look back at the Kavala coastline - ancient Neapolis, the port that connected Thasian wine to the inland Via Egnatia road.

   Thasian wine production collapsed after Byzantine and Ottoman periods eliminated commercial viticulture. The modern revival has been about reidentifying which slopes and soils produced the ancient famous wine. Ask locals in Thasos town (Limenas) about wine producers or the local cooperative - some are growing indigenous varieties recovered from the island's wild margins; others use Greek mainland varieties on Thasian terroir. The question being asked: does ancient Thasian soil still make wine differently? Ask at any wine shop or restaurant: 'Do you have local Thasian wine?' If yes, ask: 'How long has this producer been making wine?' You'll hear a story about revival, about reconnecting with the ancient.

   Thasos preserved its wine laws in stone. The inscription survives.

   Ancient Thasos had strict wine quality laws inscribed in stone - one of the earliest recorded wine regulations in history. The inscription prohibited adding water to wine for sale, set rules for wine measures, and established penalties for adulteration. This is the ancestor of France's AOC system and every modern wine appellation law. The idea that wine should represent its origin and be produced honestly was enforced in the ancient agora of Thasos town 2,500 years ago. Locate the agora ruins near the seafront and look for inscribed stone fragments displayed in the on-site cases. Ask the site attendant about the wine regulations - they'll point you toward the relevant section.
