The 'Hedgehog Vineyard' is named for the prickly conditions - 690m altitude, northern exposure, cold lake air from both sides. Vines are water-stressed in summer and snow-covered in winter, producing small berries with concentrated flavors and intense color. This is Xinomavro at its most extreme - not the lighter style of lower Naoussa slopes but wine with Barolo weight and Burgundy precision. At Alpha Estate (30 minutes south of Florina, between Lake Petres and Lake Vegoritida), ask specifically for the Hedgehog Vineyard Xinomavro and the Barba Yannis Reserve from 1919-planted vines. When the founders chose this site in 1997, they were told the altitude was too high and the climate too cold. The reserve from century-old vines proved them wrong.
🔄 BACKUP: If those specific wines aren't available, any Amyndeon PDO Xinomavro from Alpha demonstrates the altitude effect. Ask: 'How does this compare to a Naoussa Xinomavro?' The answer maps the altitude difference onto flavor.
