   Find Where the Winged Victory of Samothrace Once Stood

   In 1863, French antiquarian Charles Champoiseau dug up a marble statue in 203 pieces from this hill. Reassembled, it became the Nike of Samothrace - the Winged Victory - now at the top of the Louvre's grand staircase, viewed by 10 million people annually. The EMPTY PEDESTAL remains at the Sanctuary of the Great Gods (northwestern Samothrace, near Paleopoli village). Climb to the monument base near the southeastern section above the Stoa, look southeast toward the Thracian Sea - Nike faced the water to greet arriving worshippers from the sea. Stand where she stood and look where she looked.

   🔄 BACKUP: The on-site archaeological museum has plaster casts of several sanctuary sculptures including Nike-related fragments. Even without the Louvre trip, the context is fully visible here.

   Learn the One Mystery Cult That Accepted Absolutely Everyone

   Every other major Greek mystery cult - Eleusis, Dionysiac, Orphic - had prerequisites: Greek citizen, male, free person. Samothrace had NONE. Men, women, children, slaves, foreigners, any nationality could be initiated. Stand at the Anaktoron threshold (Hall of Rites, lower precinct) and read scholar Walter Burkert's documented finding: 'Wine jars are the only characteristic group of finds' from Cabeiri mystery sites. 'Abundant wine drinking to the point of intense drunkenness' was part of the ceremony - Dionysus's gift used as sacrament in the only open-door mystery cult in the ancient world.

   Hike Fonias Gorge to the 30-Meter Natural Pool

   The Fonias River ('murderer' in Greek - testament to spring current strength) cuts through northeastern Samothrace, creating vathres: natural pools carved by glacial meltwater from Mount Saos. Start at the trailhead 5km east of Therma village and follow the river upstream 1.7km to the largest vathra - 30 meters in diameter, cathedral-deep. CRITICAL RULE: No sunscreen or soap in the water - local law and strong social convention protect these sacred pools. The water springs from 1,611-meter Mount Saos and stays cold even in August.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the gorge is crowded (July-August packed), the section near Therma hot springs has smaller vathres usually quieter. Therma's sulfuric hot spring pools are also worth 30 minutes before or after the gorge hike.
