When the volcanic eruption of 1600 BC buried Akrotiri, almost every fresco was found by archaeologists in pieces — collapsed, fragmented, reassembled like puzzles over decades. The Spring Fresco is the single exception: found completely intact. It shows Santorini as it looked BEFORE the eruption — red lilies blooming on rocky outcrops, pairs of swallows flying between them. This is a portrait of paradise 3,600 years before Instagram. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera (center of Fira, 85m from the bus station) displays it on the ground floor. Find the Spring Fresco display, read the excavation note about how it was found, count the swallows visible. Notice the flowers are on volcanic rock — the same rock you walked on today. Admission: €6 single, or €15 combined ticket (valid 3 days, includes Akrotiri site + Ancient Thera).
🔄 BACKUP: Hours: 08:30-15:30, closed Tuesday. If Tuesday, use the €15 combined ticket to visit Akrotiri site first.
