   Stand at the Temple Carthage Destroyed in One Day

   In 409 BC, Hannibal Mago's army killed 16,000 people in Selinunte and enslaved 5,000 more - one of the most total destructions in ancient history.

   At its peak, Selinunte had 30,000 inhabitants and was one of the wealthiest Greek cities in the west. Then in 409 BC, 100,000 Carthaginian soldiers besieged it. The city fell in 9 days. Hannibal Mago was executing 70-year family revenge for his grandfather's death at Himera. Temples were systematically toppled — their massive column drums still lie where they fell. At Temple E (partially reconstructed on the eastern hill), walk to fallen drums of Temple G (unfinished Temple of Zeus). The 3.4m diameter drums dwarf human scale. Temple E reconstruction used only fallen pieces already on-site — no new stone added.

   Locate Temple C - Built When Rome Was Still a Village

   Temple C on the Selinunte acropolis dates to around 550 BC - making it contemporary with the founding of the Roman Republic.

   Temple C (dedicated to Apollo or Heracles — scholars disagree) was built around 550 BC when Rome was still a village. It's one of the oldest surviving Greek temples in the west, famous for carved metopes now in Palermo's Archaeological Museum. On the acropolis (central hill), stand and look in all directions: south to the sea Greek colonists crossed; east to Temple E; north to defensive ravines. The entire urban plan of ancient Selinunte is visible — long straight streets between temples, the grid system inspiring every subsequent planned city in the western world.

   Read the Hillside - Find Where the Sea Traders Came From

   Selinunte was founded by sea and destroyed by land - the topography tells the whole story from the edge of the acropolis.

   Selinunte's founders from Megara Hyblaea chose this promontory to see approaching ships from any direction and control coastal trade routes. Two rivers (Modione west, Cottone east) provided freshwater and natural moats. At the southern edge of the acropolis plateau facing the Mediterranean, see three landscape elements simultaneously: the sea where Phoenicians traded and wealth arrived; ravines north and east providing natural defensive walls; the inland agricultural plain where grain and vines funded the temples. Consider: how did 30,000 people choose this location with complete confidence? Carthage eventually answered that question.
