The ancient colony of Cremissa, now Cirò Marina, produced a wine called Krimisa that was awarded to Olympic gold medalists instead of - or alongside - laurel wreaths. When the 2004 Athens Olympics came around, someone remembered. Cirò Krimisa wines were presented to champions again, 2,500 years after the tradition began. Head to any wine shop or enoteca in Cirò Marina along the Ionian seafront (Corso Vittorio Emanuele III has several) and ask for a 'Cirò Rosso DOC Classico' - this is the direct descendant. The Classico zone is the historical heart, planted on limestone terraces above the sea. Smell it before you drink it: the aromatics of a grape called Gaglioppo - from the Greek 'Kalos Podos,' meaning 'beautiful foot,' for the shape of its cluster.
🔄 BACKUP: Any Cirò DOC red label will work. Look for the word 'Gaglioppo' on the back label - it should be the primary grape.
