   In Dwelling Unit 3 of the Terrace Houses (separate €15 ticket), a mosaic of Dionysus decorates the floor of a symposium dining room. Ancient Rome's richest citizens lived with wine as daily ritual, not special occasion. The geographer Strabon wrote he preferred Ephesian wine over famous Samos wines - like saying 'I prefer Anatolian wine over Burgundy.' Wine from this coast was considered the best in the known world. Enter Unit 3 via raised walkway, look for the figure reclining with grapes and cup, ask attendants: 'Which room has the Dionysus mosaic?' They know exactly where it is.

   Locate the Largest Dionysus Temple That Ever Existed

   This is where the wine god's cult was born - and you can stand inside it

   The largest temple to Dionysus in the entire ancient world was at Teos, just 30km from Ephesus. Even more shocking: the cult of Dionysus did NOT originate in Greece - it originated here in Anatolia, then emigrated westward. The Greeks borrowed their wine god from Turkey, not the other way around. Find information panels near the Library of Celsus covering cult buildings, read inscription references to Dionysus, then say out loud: 'This is where Dionysus was born.' Because it's true.

   Walk the Street That Made Wine History

   The marble road under your feet is 2,000 years old

   Wine amphorae were hauled up the Marble Street from the harbor to the Terrace Houses above. At its peak, Ephesus was the second-largest city in the Roman world with 250,000-500,000 residents. The nighttime wine culture - symposia in hillside homes, festivals for Artemis and Dionysus - shaped Mediterranean drinking traditions for centuries. Arrive at opening (08:00) before tour groups, walk toward the Library of Celsus, then turn and look back uphill. Those terraces to your right were wealthy homes with wine cellars and Dionysus mosaics.
