   Christian tradition holds that John brought Mary to the same Aegean hillside where Dionysus's cult was born. The theological story is extraordinary: both Dionysus and Christ turned water into wine. In Ephesus - Dionysus's birthplace - both traditions coexisted until Christianity absorbed the wine symbolism entirely. The Eucharist is Dionysus transformed. At the House of the Virgin Mary (7km from Selçuk, €15, 08:00-19:00), stand at the small chapel altar where the transformation of wine from pagan sacrament to Christian Eucharist converged. Ask local guides: 'Why did Mary come to Ephesus, the city of Dionysus?' The theological answer is more interesting than the tourist one.

   Backup: The Wishing Wall outside - covered in prayers from Christians and Muslims - is free to access and one of few sites sacred to both faiths.

   Pope Paul VI visited in 1967, Pope John Paul II in 1979, Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. Three papal visits to a small Turkish hillside house reveal its theological weight. More remarkable: 19th century German nun Anne Catherine Emmerich, bedridden with stigmata, 'described' this exact location in visions published in 1852. Explorers found it where she described.
