Grand Champagne Helsinki

Finland's premier Champagne celebration - 10 years in 2025. 437 champagnes from 84 houses, master classes, in the historic Old Student House. Includes Lehmann champagne glass.

What to do there

3 things to do

1. 1 Taste 437 Champagnes Under Student Hall Chandeliers Wine · Price: moderate

Grand Champagne Helsinki happens annually in April at the Old Student House (Vanha ylioppilaistalo, Mannerheimintie 3) — a 19th-century student hall with chandeliers and columns. Buy your ticket (around EUR 60-80, includes a Lehmann tasting glass) at grandchampagnehelsinki.fi. The format: 437 champagnes from 84 houses across multiple floors. Start on the upper floor where grower champagnes (RM producers) cluster — these are the bottles you can't find at Alko. Taste at least 5 grower champagnes before touching any grande maison. The quality difference is the education.

Backup: If the April event is sold out, the autumn Grand Vin Helsinki (October) offers a similar format with still wines.

2. 2 Find the Master Class That Changes Your Palate Wine · Price: moderate

Grand Champagne includes master classes led by international winemakers and MW-level educators. Check the program schedule (published 2-3 weeks before the event) and book a master class — they sell out fast. The best master classes compare terroir: chalk vs clay soil champagnes side by side, or vintage vs non-vintage from the same house. Ask the master class leader: 'What's the one thing about Champagne that even wine professionals get wrong?' The answer is usually about dosage, aging, or terroir — and it genuinely changes how you taste.

Backup: If master classes are sold out, attend any free seminar at the event. There are usually 3-4 open sessions.

3. 3 Ask a Champagne House Why They Fly to Helsinki History · Free · Optional

Walk up to any champagne house representative and ask: 'Why do you exhibit in Helsinki?' The answer reveals how Finland went from wine afterthought to must-attend market. Common responses: 'The Finnish palate is the most educated in the Nordics,' 'Helsinki buyers know more about champagne than most Parisian buyers,' or simply 'Essi Avellan told us to come.' The fact that 84 champagne houses fly to a city with zero vineyards and 650,000 people tells you everything about Helsinki's wine gravitational pull.

Backup: If the producers are too busy for conversation (peak hours), read the house brochures — many include quotes about the Finnish market.
