   At Kauppatori (Market Square), buy a JT-Line ferry ticket to Vallisaari (around EUR 9 return, runs May-September). As the ferry pulls out of the harbour, face east — Uspenski Cathedral's 13 gold-topped domes dominate the Katajanokka skyline. Each dome was financed by Helsinki's Russian Orthodox merchant community during the Grand Duchy era (1809-1917). Count all 13 before the ferry rounds the headland. The central dome represents Christ; the surrounding 12 represent the apostles.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you lose count (the smaller domes cluster), photograph the cathedral as you leave harbour and count at leisure. The cathedral is also free to visit on the return trip.

   Spot the Fortress That Made Helsinki Matter

   As the ferry crosses towards Vallisaari, look south-southwest for Suomenlinna's massive stone walls emerging from the water. Built from 1748 by Swedish Admiral Augustin Ehrensvärd to counter Russia's Kronstadt, this UNESCO fortress transformed Helsinki from a burnt-out village into a strategic capital. The fortress was never fully completed but it changed Helsinki's fate permanently. Watch for the King's Gate — the ceremonial entrance facing the open sea — as the ferry passes the southern channel.

   Time the Crossing Against Helsinki's First Settlers

   The ferry takes 20 minutes to reach Vallisaari. Start a timer when you leave Kauppatori. In 1550, King Gustav Vasa forced merchants from four Finnish towns to relocate here — across this exact stretch of water — to challenge Tallinn's Hanseatic trade monopoly 80 km across the Gulf. The merchants had no choice: relocate or lose trading rights. The project was doomed from day one (the harbour was too shallow for proper ships). You're crossing their failure route in comfort. When the timer hits 20 minutes and you step onto Vallisaari, imagine arriving by rowboat in November 1550.
