   Find the 1944 Soviet Shrapnel Marks on the Three Smiths

   The Three Smiths Statue (Kolmen sepän patsas) stands at the intersection of Aleksanterinkatu, Mannerheimintie, and Keskuskatu. Felix Nylund sculpted these three blacksmiths hammering an anvil in 1932. During the February 1944 Soviet bombing of Helsinki — the heaviest aerial bombardment Finland ever experienced — shrapnel scarred the bronze. Run your fingers along the base and lower figures. Find the pockmarks — small, irregular divots in the bronze that don't match the sculptor's chisel work. Each mark is a fragment of a Soviet bomb. The statue survived; 100 buildings around it didn't.

   🔄 BACKUP: The marks are subtle. Look for areas where the bronze patina is slightly different — lighter spots indicate impact repairs or shrapnel damage.

   Sit in Two Minutes of Silence at Kamppi Chapel

   Walk 200 metres west from the Three Smiths to the Kamppi Chapel of Silence (2012) in the Narinkkatori square. This curved wooden cocoon was designed by K2S Architects as a space for silence in Helsinki's busiest commercial district. Enter through the single door. There are no religious symbols, no services — just wooden walls, a bench, and silence. The chapel seats about 60 people. Sit for exactly two minutes without touching your phone. The contrast with the shopping centre outside is the point. The wood is spruce, bent into a continuous curve with no visible joins.

   🔄 BACKUP: If there's a queue (rare), walk around the exterior — the curved wooden form is architecturally striking from outside too. Free entry, no booking needed.

   Walk Across the Amos Rex Underground Domes

   From Kamppi Chapel, walk to Lasipalatsi (Glass Palace) on the east side of Mannerheimintie. Amos Rex art museum (2018) is built entirely underground — but its ceiling breaks through the surface as undulating concrete domes in Lasipalatsin aukio plaza. Walk across the domes. Kids slide down them. The skylights in the dome peaks let natural light into the galleries below. This is Finnish architecture at its most playful — a museum you walk ON before you walk IN.    🔄 BACKUP: Museum entry is around EUR 15 if you want to go inside. The dome walk is always free and the best part for non-art-obsessives.
