   Cross the 75-Metre Class Divide

   Find Pitkäsilta (Long Bridge) connecting Sörnäinen to Kruununhaka, spanning Eteläsatama harbour. The bridge is only 75 metres long but has divided Helsinki by class since 1651 — south of the bridge meant wealth and power, north meant workers and immigrants. Walk across slowly. On the south side: the Presidential Palace, government buildings, and luxury apartments. On the north side: Kallio's bars, street art, and bohemian energy. This is still one of the sharpest neighbourhood transitions in Europe. Count your steps across. Under 100 steps separate two economic worlds.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the bridge is under renovation, the parallel pedestrian crossing at Hakaniemi gives the same neighbourhood transition, just 200 metres east.

   Time the Sibelius Bells at Kallio Church

   From the north end of Pitkäsilta, look up. Lars Sonck's 1912 Kallio Church is a granite monolith that dominates the skyline like a medieval fortress. Walk up the hill (Siltasaarenkatu) — about 10 minutes. At noon and 6 PM, the church bells play Jean Sibelius's JS 102, a hymn he composed specifically for this church's inauguration in 1912. Arrive 5 minutes early and stand on the church steps facing south — the bells ring above you while you look over the city Sibelius helped soundtrack. This is a free, unrepeatable-anywhere-else experience. The bells play for about 2 minutes.

   🔄 BACKUP: If you miss noon, the 6 PM bells are usually quieter (fewer tourists). The church interior is open during daytime hours — the granite walls create remarkable acoustics.

   Read the Granite That Built National Romanticism

   Kallio Church is pure National Romantic architecture — the Finnish movement that used native granite and nature motifs to assert national identity during Russian rule. Run your hand along the church wall. This is Finnish granite, quarried locally, deliberately chosen over imported marble or limestone. Lars Sonck designed the church to look like it grew from the bedrock — because in a sense, Finnish independence grew from this cultural resistance movement. Find the carved details above the entrance: simplified, massive, Nordic. Compare mentally to the delicate Art Nouveau you saw in Punavuori — same era, different political message.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the church is being cleaned (scaffolding), the raw granite is visible on the side walls.
