   This 7-hour round trip hike (11.87-13km) gains 1,250m to reach a turquoise glacier lake at 2,600m. Before starting from Venosc village (accessible via gondola from Les 2 Alpes), buy supplies: Vin de Pays de l'Isère (Verdesse if possible, €10-20), saucisson de Savoie, Comté cheese, baguette, plastic cups. The trail (marked red/white) crosses spruce forest, follows the Pisse stream, passes Muzelle waterfall, climbs alpine lawns. You're entering 918 km² of wilderness — 150 peaks over 3,000m, ibex, chamois, golden eagles. Les 2 Alpes has 50,000 beds; Écrins National Park has ZERO lifts. Start early (7-8am), pace yourself on the steady elevation gain, and picnic at the lake knowing you're in one of France's wildest places.

   🔄 BACKUP: If 7 hours is too long, hike to Muzelle waterfall (2 hours round trip). Same wine/saucisson picnic, shorter commitment. Or hire a mountain guide for a glacier viewpoint.

   Spot Ibex or Chamois - Wildlife That Predates Ski Lifts

   Écrins National Park protects chamois, ibex (males with 1-meter curved horns), wolves, golden eagles, bearded vultures. Ibex nearly went extinct by 1900 from hunting, were reintroduced from Gran Paradiso Italy in the 1960s. If you spot one along the Lac de la Muzelle trail, you're seeing an animal that climbed these mountains LONG before humans carved ski runs. Best viewing: early morning (6-9am) or late afternoon (17-19h). Look for movement on rocky slopes — ibex blend into gray rock, so scan slowly. If you spot one, FREEZE and watch how they move on near-vertical terrain with specialized hooves evolved over millions years. You learned to ski; ibex were BORN for this.

   🔄 BACKUP: If no ibex sightings, listen for marmot whistles (HIGH and sharp warnings) or look overhead for bearded vultures (3-meter wingspan, orange-red plumage) dropping bones to crack them for marrow.

   Taste How Altitude Changes Wine from Valley to 2,600m

   Buy a bottle of Savoie or Isère wine in Les 2 Alpes village (1,650m), bring plastic cups. Taste and write notes at village level, then carry the same bottle to Lac de la Muzelle (2,600m) and taste again after 4+ hours hiking. Atmospheric pressure at 2,600m is ~75% of sea level — lower pressure makes you perceive MORE acidity. The wine is identical, but will taste SHARPER, more austere than at the village. Your palate is the experiment. This explains why airline wine (pressurized to ~2,400m equivalent) tastes terrible. Take written notes at each elevation: 'Village: balanced, fruity, smooth. Lake: acidic, mineral, almost harsh.' Total cost: €10-20 for pure elevation education.

   🔄 BACKUP: If carrying a full bottle is too heavy, buy a half-bottle (375ml) or wine in a can. Lighter to carry, same pressure experiment.

   Read the Refuge Book at Muzelle Refuge

   Mountain refuges keep guest books — journals where hikers record visits, weather, wildlife sightings, summit attempts. The Muzelle refuge book at the lake (2,600m) goes back decades, possibly to the refuge's opening. Ask the guardian: 'Puis-je voir le livre d'or?' Look for entries from the 1960s-70s (when Écrins became a national park), mentions of glacier retreat, first-time visitors' reactions. These entries are time capsules of Alpine history. If staying overnight, add your own: 'Hiked from Venosc, drank Isère wine at the lake, saw ibex. The park is France's soul.'

   🔄 BACKUP: If refuge closed or no guest book available, write your own entry on paper and leave it under a rock by the lake. Someone will find it — that's refuge culture.
