   This ice cave is carved FRESH each season by 2 high mountain guides — Bernard Lambolez and Bruno Gardent — who tunnel 30 meters into glacier ice that fell as snow possibly 1000+ years ago. The temperature hovers around -2°C year-round in nature's perfect wine cellar. At the top of Jandri Express 2 cable car (3,400m), exit and follow 'Grotte de Glace' signs for a 5-minute walk. Open daily 9:45am-3:30pm (season 29 Nov 2025 to 3 May 2026), €6.50 adult. Wear warm layers — you'll go from summer sun to -2°C in seconds. Walk slowly through blue ice tunnels, touch the smooth walls, and remember: the Alps have lost 30-40% of glacier surface since 1850. This cave might not exist in 20 years.

   Emerge and Taste Wine That Aged at Altitude

   Exit the -2°C glacier ice and walk 5 minutes to Le 3200 restaurant's panoramic terrace. The temperature shock to your palate is the entire experience. At 3,200m elevation, atmospheric pressure is ~70% of sea level, making your taste buds perceive acidity MORE intensely. Order Savoie white (Jacquère or Chignin-Bergeron, €8-15) and notice how SHARP it tastes — almost austere compared to valley level. Ask the bartender: 'Do you store wine up here or bring it up daily?' Then plan to repeat this tasting in the valley to compare. You're doing a live altitude experiment — the same reason airline wine tastes terrible.

   The Alps have lost an additional 10-20% of glacier volume since 1980. Les 2 Alpes ended summer glacier skiing in early July 2022 due to heatwaves. Scientists predict most Alpine glaciers will disappear by 2050. Ask staff who've worked here 10+ years: 'How has the glacier changed since you started?' or 'Is the Grotte de Glace in the same location as 20 years ago?' Older lift operators, ski patrol, and restaurant managers will point out rock outcrops that were buried under ice, bergschrunds that have widened. The ice cave's existence depends on glacier depth — if it thins too much, they can't carve safely.

   Compare Ice Blue to Sky Blue

   Glacier ice appears BLUE for the same reason the sky is blue — Rayleigh scattering. Dense glacier ice absorbs red wavelengths and scatters blue; the older and denser the ice, the deeper the blue. Inside the cave, photograph the bluest ice wall section, then step outside and photograph the sky. Compare the hues: glacier blue is greenish-cyan (absorbed red), while sky blue at 3,400m is pure azure (less atmosphere to scatter light). Ask a guide: 'Why is old glacier ice blue?' You're comparing two blues created by the same physics in different media.

   🔄 BACKUP: If the cave is too dark, use your phone flashlight through thin ice sections — it glows ELECTRIC blue. That's 1000-year-old snow compressed into crystal.
