   Standard Alpine lapse rate: temperature drops ~6.5°C per 1,000m elevation (dry air) or ~5°C (moist air). You're ascending 1,550m, expecting an 8-10°C drop. Check temperature at base station (weather app), write it down, then check again at 3,200m. Compare to theoretical drop (1,550m × 6.5°C/1000m = 10°C). If actual drop is LESS than 10°C, the day is unusually warm at altitude (climate change signal?). If MORE, it's cold/windy. Your body traveled from one climate zone to another in 17 minutes — this explains why Alpine ecosystems are fragile. A 2°C warming shifts treeline up 300m, leaving species nowhere to go.

   Watch Alpenglow Hit the Peaks from 3,200m

   Arrive at Le 3200 restaurant 1 hour before sunset for the Alps' nightly light show. Alpenglow — reddish-pink-orange light on peaks — is INTENSE at 3,200m because you're above atmospheric haze. As the sun drops below horizon, watch La Meije (3,983m), Barre des Écrins (4,102m), and dozens of peaks catch light sequentially: pink → orange → red → purple over 20-40 minutes. Order wine or coffee, position yourself on the west-facing terrace, and ask staff: 'Which peak lights up LAST?' Usually the highest — Barre des Écrins at 4,102m. When the last peak fades to gray, temperature drops 5-10°C instantly. You've witnessed why humans built gondolas to 3,200m.
