   Board the cable car at 10:30am and for the first 10 minutes, you're trapped in a metal box with 60 strangers, ascending through fog and rock. Then at 2,800m you punch through the clouds. Suddenly: 360° of Alpine peaks, glaciers stretching to Italy, the Matterhorn visible 100km away. The Aiguille du Midi cable car station in central Chamonix takes you on this 20-minute vertical mile journey to 3,842m. Book tickets online at montblancnaturalresort.com 1-2 weeks ahead (€65-75 round trip). Dress warm (-10°C to -20°C outside even in summer), bring sunglasses for snow glare, and exit at summit through the tunnel to the main building.

   🔄 BACKUP: If weather closes the cable car, Plan de l'Aiguille mid-station (2,317m) has a refuge with wine service - not 3,842m but still impressive.

   At 3,842 meters, wine tastes lighter and alcohol hits faster - the thin air changes everything about your palate. Order a glass of Savoie Apremont or Roussette (€18-25) at Le 3842 restaurant inside the summit building and request window seating facing south. You're drinking wine grown at 400m while staring at rock and ice at 4,810m - the altitude contrast is staggering. Arrive at 11:30am restaurant opening (summer) or 12pm (winter) to claim your window spot before the lunch rush, order wine FIRST, claim position SECOND, and stay maximum 60-90 minutes to avoid altitude sickness.

   🔄 BACKUP: If Le 3842 is full, the outdoor terrace bar at 3,777m (one level down) serves wine and Champagne. Same view, 65m lower - still highest in Europe.

You do. Stand at Le 3842's south-facing windows with wine in hand, looking up at Mont Blanc summit 968m higher than where you're standing. The Vallée Blanche glacier stretches 20km to the Italian border below.    🔄 BACKUP: If clouds obscure Mont Blanc (check weather before ascending), the experience still works - you're drinking at 3,842m regardless. But clear skies make the story.
