The Aiguille du Midi cable car station in central Chamonix takes you on this 20-minute vertical mile journey to 3,842m. Dress warm (-10°C to -20°C outside even in summer), bring sunglasses for snow glare, and exit at summit through the tunnel to the main building.

   Backup: If weather closes the cable car, Plan de l'Aiguille mid-station (2,317m) has a refuge with wine service - not 3,842m but still impressive.
