Cars are everywhere. Designated drivers complain. But bikes? Bikes are freedom. The Hautvillers-Cumières-Aÿ circuit is 15km of gentle hills, vineyard paths, and 3 villages with grower tastings. No parking. No sobriety math. Just pedaling between pours.

1. 1 Rent a Bike in Épernay Adventure · Price: low

   E-bikes are recommended for the hills around Épernay — standard bikes work if you're fit, but the 6km climb to Hautvillers is real. Rentals run €25-40/day at bike shops or the tourist office, and some hotels lend bikes to guests. Book the morning of or day before, and ask for a map of vineyard paths to navigate the less obvious routes.

   Backup: Walking is possible but slower - Hautvillers alone is 6km from Épernay.

2. 2 Ride to Hautvillers via Vineyard Path Adventure · Free

   The vineyard paths offer 6km of gentle climbing through vines with sweeping views of the Marne valley, leading you to Hautvillers where Dom Pérignon worked among 140 wrought iron signs and grower tastings everywhere. Follow the signposted "Route du Champagne," taking the vineyard paths rather than the main road — the path is marked but not always obvious, so ask at the bike shop.

   Backup: Main road is busier but easier to navigate.

3. 3 Continue to Cumières and Aÿ Wine · Price: low

   Three villages, three distinct characters await on this 7km stretch: touristy but lovely Hautvillers, quiet Cumières (Georges Laval territory), and larger Aÿ with the Pressoria museum nearby. Follow signs and vineyard paths between Hautvillers → Cumières (3km) → Aÿ (4km), stopping at 1-2 growers in each village for tastings at €5-20 per stop — pace yourself.

   Backup: Skip one village if tired - the circuit is flexible.

4. 4 Return to Épernay (Downhill Finish) Adventure · Free

   The gentle descent from Aÿ to Épernay (5km) offers valley views spreading below as your reward — you'll arrive back tipsy but proud after this mostly downhill finish. Follow signs to Épernay, return the bike, and celebrate your vineyard circuit.

   Backup: If too tired, call a taxi from Aÿ - they'll pick you and bike up (arrange in advance).
