   "Faux" means twisted in old French, and here in the forest above Verzy village, over 1,000 mutant beech trees grow in impossible shapes that monks have protected since the 6th century. Park at the main lot off D34 road (free) and take the marked "Sentier des Faux" — a 1.6km loop through this genetic mystery where horizontal growth creates parasol shapes and tortured forms that no scientist fully understands. Morning or late afternoon light reveals the alien beauty best, avoiding harsh midday shadows that flatten their sculptural drama.

   Find the Oldest Twisted Beech

   Some of these twisted giants are 800+ years old, with massive tentacle-like branches and canopies that touch the ground — they're called "faux" (false) because they look nothing like real beeches. Follow signs to "Faux remarquables" along the main trail to find the largest specimens with plaques, and photograph them with a person for scale since some spread 15+ meters wide while staying only 5 meters tall. Touch the bark carefully — it's smooth like any beech, but the alien shapes feel otherworldly.

   Photograph the Vineyard Views from the Ridge

   The forest crowns the Montagne de Reims, offering striking views over Grand Cru vineyards where twisted fairytale forest meets precise vineyard geometry below. At the ridge viewpoint (signed "Point de vue"), look south toward Verzy, Verzenay, and Mailly vineyards — arrive before 9am when morning mist often fills the valleys for atmospheric shots, and spot the lighthouse of Verzenay visible from here.

   Visit a Montagne de Reims Grower After

   Complete your morning by tasting the Grand Cru Pinot Noir champagne from the vineyards you just walked above. Drive 5-10 minutes downhill to Verzy or Verzenay villages and visit growers like Vilmart & Cie (Rilly) or Egly-Ouriet (Ambonnay, 15 min), or try the Verzenay Lighthouse wine museum with small tastings included in entry — the perfect pairing of twisted forest wonder and precise winemaking craft.
