The Women Who Built Champagne
SIDEQUEST: The Widow Crawl
Veuve Clicquot. Veuve = widow. Champagne was shaped by widows: Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, widowed at 27, ran her house from 1805. Louise Pommery, widowed in 1858, bought a hill in Reims above 18 km of chalk galleries. Lily Bollinger took charge of her house in 1941, in the middle of the Occupation, and ran it for thirty years. This is a pilgrimage to their graves, their houses, and their legacy. Women built champagne.
