   Every Vin Jaune comes in the clavelin—a squat, 62cl bottle commissioned by the Abbot of Clavelin in 1914. Why 62cl instead of 75cl? It's the 'angels' share' made tangible: start with 1 liter of wine, age it 6 years and 3 months in a barrel that's NEVER topped up, and 62cl remains. The missing 38cl evaporated. At any of the 8 independent winemakers in Château-Chalon, hold a clavelin and feel the thick glass designed to distinguish Vin Jaune instantly. Budget €60-160 per bottle.

   Walk the Slopes That Killed Phylloxera's Cousins

   Walk the Belvédère trail from Parking de la Tour: Sainte-Anne → Ménétru → Saint-Jean viewpoints (1.5km loop, 30-45 minutes). These vineyards grow on 45-degree slopes so harsh that when phylloxera ravaged France, related pests couldn't survive here long enough to destroy the vines. At the Saint-Jean viewpoint, look DOWN at vineyards cascading below the village fortress—each row is a battle against gravity. Otherwise, contact Domaine Berthet-Bondet for Jean Macle availability. A 2015 Jean Macle Château-Chalon retails around €80-100 per clavelin. Taste with 24-month aged Comté—locals say 'Vin Jaune and Comté—married in the terroir.'
