   Find the Replica Church Where 473 Families Lost Everything

   Easter Sunday, April 13, 1952. The last mass was held in the original church. The bells were ALREADY being melted down while people were still praying. Six days later, on April 21, the Prefect of Savoie issued an ultimatum: anyone not gone by April 27 loses eviction compensation. 473 villagers, 87 families. Only 15 families stayed in the region. The rest scattered to the wind. The replica church at the entrance to Tignes 1800 (St Jacques de Tarentaise) contains the ORIGINAL furniture and altarpieces - the only physical remnants that survived. Enter the church, find the original pieces (altar, pews, religious artifacts) - they're marked. These objects witnessed that final Easter mass. Ask yourself: what did those 473 people feel, praying in a church whose bells were being melted down around them?

   🔄 BACKUP: If church is closed, walk around the exterior. The architecture is IDENTICAL to the drowned original. Or visit Tignes tourist office and ask for the 1952 evacuation photo archive - they have images of the last mass.

   Hunt the World's Largest Outdoor Fresco - Hercules on the Dam

   In 1989, to prepare for the 1992 Winter Olympics, Jean-Marie Pierret and EIGHT other painters spent 60 days painting Hercules on the dam face. 12,000 square meters. That's nearly THREE FOOTBALL FIELDS of fresco painted on the vault of France's highest dam (181m). Why Hercules? Because it took mythological strength to build this dam - and mythological cruelty. Every time you see this fresco, you're looking at the grave marker of 473 displaced families. Drive or hike to Lac de Chevril dam viewpoint between Tignes and Val d'Isère on D902 road. Park at any viewpoint along D902 - the fresco is impossible to miss and dominates the dam face. Best light: morning (east-facing). Walk to dam base for full scale appreciation.

   🔄 BACKUP: If road closed (winter), view from Tignes Brévières gondola - the fresco is visible from multiple angles. Or hike the AllTrails route 'Tignes Les Brévières - Lac de Chevril Dam' for close-up access.

   Walk the Ruins When the Lake Drains (Every 10 Years)

   Every 10 years, EDF drains Lac de Chevril for dam maintenance. The old village emerges from 235 million cubic meters of water. When the lake drops, you can walk INTO the old houses. Stone walls, doorways, the church foundation. This is the village that 473 people were dragged away from. EDF DYNAMITED all the buildings to prevent families from returning when the lake drained. But stone foundations survive explosives. You're walking through a village that was murdered twice - once by drowning, once by dynamite. Check with Tignes tourist office or EDF for next scheduled drainage (approximately every 10 years, last one around 2022-2023, so next likely 2032-2033). When announced, visit during low-water period (usually late summer/autumn). The ruins are accessible on foot from the dam area. Bring sturdy boots - it's muddy, rocky, haunting.

   🔄 BACKUP: If not a drainage year, sometimes the lake level drops low enough in late summer to reveal the church spire top. Ask locals or check lake level monitoring. Or visit the 1952 photo exhibit at Tignes tourism office showing before/during/after the drowning.

   Taste Savoie Wine at the Altitude That Drowned a Valley

   The dam created hydroelectric power that electrified the Tarentaise valley - including the Savoie vineyards that produce Jacquère and Mondeuse. The wine in your glass exists because of the electricity from the dam that drowned Old Tignes. Progress has a price. Those 473 families paid it. You're drinking the dividend. Order a glass of Jacquère (white, crisp, €8-15) or Mondeuse (red, peppery, €10-18) at any Tignes restaurant or wine bar (L'Embuscade recommended for extensive wine list) at 2,100m+ - you're now 400m HIGHER than the drowned village was (1,700m). Ask the server: 'Do you know this wine is made possible by the Tignes dam?' They might not know the connection. Explain it. The electricity that powers the temperature-controlled fermentation tanks in Savoie wineries comes from the water that drowned Old Tignes.

   🔄 BACKUP: If wine bars closed, buy a bottle at any Tignes supermarket (€8-20), walk to the dam viewpoint, pour a glass, toast the 473. They don't have graves. The lake is their grave. Your wine glass is their memorial.
