You're looking at vines that survived the dissolution of monasteries, World Wars, and climate skepticism — this is living continuity. During the 2.5-hour tour at Nyetimber vineyard (Gay Street, West Chiltington, West Sussex, 11am or 2pm, Tues-Sun, book at nyetimber.com), ask the guide: "Where are the oldest vines?" They'll point out the original 1988 plantings with their gnarled trunks that were controversial when first planted.
